UW Recreation has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director. The newly created Assistant Director position reports to the Director and serves on the Executive Team. Overseeing a number of high-impact areas, the Assistant Director is responsible for:

  • Recreation’s marketing & communications efforts, including managing a team of student employees.
  • Creating and executing staff development programs for permanent and students/other temporary staff.
  • Supporting various existing and emerging departmental committees, projects, and initiatives.
  • Filling in as ad hoc projects and needs arise, such as providing support and coverage during staff vacancies.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Marketing & Communications

  • Develop and implement the department’s marketing and communications strategic plans for both an internal and external audience.
  • Oversee the department’s website, apps, business pages, and social media efforts, both current and emerging.
  • Hire, train, and supervise the Creative Team of part-time student employees to provide support in carrying out all marking, communications, and outreach responsibilities. Typically, the team is five students in varying roles.
  • Serve as the departmental contact to promote Rec offerings and activities at on- and off-campus outreach events (e.g., tabling at fairs, vetting sponsorship opportunities, etc.).
  • Manage the Marketing & Communications budget and maintain internal control of all expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance. Prepare an annual budget by projecting expenditures in staffing, software, services, equipment, and revenue.
  • Interact regularly and positively with Rec staff and students to accomplish marketing and communication goals.

    Staff Development

  • Oversee department-wide staff development efforts, for Recreation’s permanent staff (approximately 40) and temporary, mostly student staff (approximately 300).
  • Design and implement support structures for successful recruiting, supporting, retaining, and evaluating staff.
  • Design and implement professional development and staff recognition programs.
  • Organize and facilitate the Student Employee Leadership Board (SELB), which brings together a group of student leaders to assist with departmental planning, decision making, and events.
  • Manage the staff development budget and maintain internal control of all expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance (including preparing an annual budget).
  • Interact regularly and positively with Rec staff and students to accomplish staff development goals

    Oversee Standing Committees and Existing Projects

  • Manage the Student Rec Fund and its committee, which provides funding to students who might not otherwise be able to participate in Rec programming.
  • Reestablish and help facilitate Rec Advisory Board, a group of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Reinvent and support other departmental committees, such as the Leadership Team.
  • Represent Rec across campus by participating in and contributing to relevant committees and learning communities.

    Manage Emerging Initiatives and Department Needs

  • Fill in for departmental vacancies as they arise, necessitating an excellent general knowledge base of collegiate Recreation programs and operations.
  • Address ad hoc internal and external requests.
  • Manage multiple competing priorities.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    MINIMUM REQUIRMENTS:

  • Master’s degree
  • Two years as a professional in campus recreation, including successful experience supervising student staff, and programming collegiate recreation experiences.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to work with and communicate effectively and positively with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and colleagues within Recreation, Student Life, and across the University.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inter-University committee work as well as national organizations.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
