Job Title: Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technician

Position Overview:
A Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Surgical Technician, also known as a Cardiovascular Technologist or CVOR Tech, is a highly skilled healthcare professional who assists surgeons and other medical personnel during cardiovascular surgical procedures. They play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the operating room, handling specialized equipment, and providing support to the surgical team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Preparing the operating room: Set up the operating room for cardiovascular surgeries, including sterilizing and arranging surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies required for the procedure.
- Assisting during surgeries: Provide direct support to the surgical team by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment, anticipating their needs during the surgery. Hold retractors, sutures, and assist with wound closure.
- Operating and maintaining equipment: Operate complex machinery and equipment used during surgeries, such as heart-lung machines, electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, and intra-aortic balloon pumps. Ensure the proper functioning of equipment, troubleshoot any technical issues, and perform routine maintenance.
- Patient care: Prepare patients for surgery, including cleaning and disinfecting the surgical site and positioning patients on the operating table. Monitor patients' vital signs, such as heart rate and blood pressure, during the procedure and communicate any changes to the surgical team.
- Documentation and record-keeping: Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, including patient information, surgical supplies used, and any complications or incidents that occur during the surgery. Assist in documenting patient medical histories and updating surgical logs.
- Safety and infection control: Adhere to strict safety protocols and maintain a sterile environment in the operating room. Follow infection control procedures, maintain a clean workspace, and assist in proper disposal of hazardous materials.
- Collaboration and communication: Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in the operating room. Effectively coordinate tasks, relay important information, and respond to the surgical team's needs.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent (some employers may require an associate's degree or completion of a surgical technician program).
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist or Cardiovascular Technologist is preferred.
- Previous experience in cardiovascular surgery or operating room setting is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, surgical procedures, and related equipment.
- Proficient in sterile techniques, infection control, and safety protocols.
- Strong manual dexterity and ability to handle delicate instruments and equipment.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods and lift/move heavy equipment or patients when necessary.
Working Conditions:
Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technicians primarily work in hospitals and surgical centers. They spend most of their time in the operating room, which is a sterile environment. The work schedule may vary and could include day, evening, or on-call shifts. CVOR Techs must adhere to strict safety protocols and follow infection control procedures to minimize the risk of exposure to infectious diseases.
