POSITION SUMMARY:

The Child Witness to Violence Project (CWVP) at Boston Medical Center is seeking a Mental Health Clinician. CWVP is nationally recognized for its innovative and comprehensive services for young children and families affected by violence. CWVP is seeking a Mental Health and Intake Clinician to provide clinical mental health/trauma screening, intake, assessment, and treatment of children and families affected by violence and other forms of interpersonal trauma.

The Mental Health & Intake Clinician will conduct also clinical assessments, make psychosocial diagnoses as appropriate and provide evidence-based, diversity-informed psychotherapeutic treatment for children and their caregivers impacted by violence and other kinds of trauma exposure. The clinician will be responsible for providing assessment and intervention using a racial justice and health equity lens.

The position consults with, collaborates, and communicates with a wide range of disciplines within BMC and the community in the overall care of the patient. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the clinician will have opportunities to engage in training and teaching activities at the hospital as well as interface with a wide variety of community agencies.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Clinical Services
  • Conducts phone screenings and intake interviews for program referrals.
  • Tracks referrals and maintain phone log. Initiates communication with referred families to facilitate clinical intake appointments and connect families to appropriate level of service.
  • Provides direct clinical assessment and psychotherapeutic treatment to a small case load of children and their families who are referred to the CWVP for services.
  • Services are offered both in-person and virtually.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to a culturally diverse patient population.
  • Provides and maintains appropriate documentation in the client record within program-designated timelines for completion.
  • Provides timely documentation to the program director for grants-management purposes.
  • Provides outreach and collaboration with relevant community and medical providers.
  • Participates in weekly staff meetings, clinical meetings and weekly supervision sessions.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality according to hospital policy.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
  • Masters degree in mental health, social work, psychology or related field.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Must be a certified Massachusetts Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC).

EXPERIENCE:
  • At least a Master's degree in social work, counseling or a related field.
  • Relevant experience working with children, caregivers, and families is strongly preferred, as is experience in working with populations who have experienced trauma.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of the impact of trauma on young children and families and experience working with families impacted by trauma exposure.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with families affected by domestic violence and/or other trauma.
  • An organized work style, good follow through skills and ability to keep organized written documentation.
  • Demonstrated skills in the provision of services in a multicultural environment.
  • Experience in health or hospital settings desirable.
  • Must be comfortable in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work effectively, comfortably, and sensitively with ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse individuals and with people from historically marginalized and underserved communities.
  • Knowledge of and competence in advocating with community resources and agencies that serve children and families affected by violence or trauma exposure.
  • Experience with and comfort with implementing crisis intervention services.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families and to interact effectively with various healthcare professionals.
  • Computer literacy with ability to use standard word processing, spreadsheet programs, and e-mail (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) and web browsers.
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is a plus.
