OBJECTIVES:
As a foundation stone in the RMC endorsed improvement plan for Lab Operations this new role will be a first of its kind in Takeda R&D. The role will be central to the evolution of our future laboratory supply chain working in support of all Research, Pharm Sci & Oncology/Cell therapy laboratory-based scientists to deliver the best logistical and planning environment globally.
The candidate taking this role will be the primary leader and owner for the new inventory, asset management and planning/reporting systems. This role will be responsible for consistent global implementation of the new Logistical processes and systems and will subsequently oversee the smooth running of the entire global supply chain of lab materials.
This new role will set the foundations for the global operating model beginning with driving the implementation of the new IT systems and their supporting processes. The Head of Laboratory Planning and Logistics will have global visibility of all Lab Inventory and assets and their attendant costs. This person will be responsible for the oversight and management of a budget in excess of $200m. The role will be a prominent change leader for new global processes including asset management, capacity planning and supplier relationship management & measurement.
- The person fitting this role with be a pharma-experienced Supply Chain Specialist with over 10 years of experience in a decision-making operational role. Must have experience of successfully managing planning, sourcing and procuring of pharma production, as well as setting the parameters for suppliers and their performance in the order fulfilment process to global locations.
- Must provide leadership in the delivery of inventory and planning improvements at a significant budgetary level. Must have hands-on approach to the configuration and setting of operational parameters for all materials & assets in the global lab supply chain.
- Will drive the roadmap and communicate the plan for a swift roll out of the new inventory and order fulfilment processes and systems to all R&D global labs.
- Sets out the targets to fulfil the business case benefits for laboratory operations optimization in terms of service, productivity and efficiency.
- Builds an exceptional data foundation (including consistent master data) to support the new systems.
- Helps train and coach staff in all supporting functions in the logistical improvements including future global visibility of inventory. Will become a popular and engaged change advocate with ability to listen and resolve challenges in a highly collaborative manner.
- Promotes the benefits of agility and productivity by leveraging data and clear evidence of smoother operations in support of the Takeda scientific community. Acts as a clear voice for positive change. Priorities and plans process improvement with Operations and GREFP teams.
- Supports the evolving design of the new operating model and brings in deep supply chain thinking to improve the future process model. Will design and drive AI-enhanced improvements to the Lab Logistics and Planning for the future.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Accountable for the execution of new global Lab inventory and planning processes and systems. Following on to Asset management and KPI development for Lab Operations.
- Translate process improvement program strategy into detailed deliverables across the laboratory footprint in Boston Central Campus. By FY24 a roll-out globally to other R&D sites will commence. Leads execution of all logistical elements of the plan.
- Drive the delivery of business benefits through implementation of solid supply chain principles:
- With procurement, plan requirements and consolidate volumes across functions to get volume rebate and reduce orders.
- With procurement and Ops team, use e-marketplace tools to get competitive purchase price on lab materials.
- With IT and suppliers, work towards a goal of automated order processing/vendor managed inventory so order fulfilment is managed and runs smoothly with significant time saving and reduced inventory/PO based issues.
- With facilities, procurement and LabOps, design a plan for centralized/POU staged common/shared stock to reduce storage space and expiry across functions.
- With finance achieve reduced inventory holding and subsequent obsolescence of consumables
- Act as voce of change and the lead super user for all new IT systems and decide on the key configuration decisions. To be energetic leader for implementation phase and troubleshoot with IT/Vendor all issues before go-live across Boston campus.
- To ensure that maximum availability of materials is maintained in the most cost-effective manner, even during cutover to the new system
- To design KPIs and provide clear performance reporting for each type of inventory
- Act as anchor point for suppliers of inventory and inventory management services(e.g. Avantor/Thermo) on behalf of Lab Ops and measure KPI performance and drive improvements and root cause analysis.
- Provide the single voice to negotiate conformance to new processes by internal staff and external suppliers. To lead training on new system and order fulfillment processes.
- To set out pathway for evolution of logistics management team over the next 3 years and eventually manage materials management staff.
- Engage with key stakeholders and the lab scientists in design of future operating model for lab supply chain
- Provide momentum to the Global Laboratory Operations optimization efforts by demonstrating benefits and planning the future rollout roadmap
- Negotiate with cross-functional teams for robust decision making and inventory control to assure efficient and compliant lab materials supply chain
- Key deliverables:
- Successful implementation of new lab materials systems and processes.
- Set plan for implementation of Power BI measures and Asset management system.
- Accountable for running the IMS and that parameters are optimized for service and cost.
- Accountable for future running of AMS and the parameters
- Publishing and maintaining IMS KPIs
- Providing early warning of approaching service failures and undertaking appropriate action to prevent stock-outs
- Managing stock obsolescence and expiry
- Report on Budget, Service and Financial goals
- Act as key future global rollout leader of lab supply chain initiatives to Japan, US and EU sites
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- BS or MS degree required in science / technology subject.
- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in pharmaceutical industry with increasing level of responsibility required
- Minimum of 5+ years of managerial experience including supply chain planning and experience of R&D planning (such as clinical trials)
- Experience in a team leadership role
- Proven track record of driving business process improvement and systems/planning change
- Operational experience in supply chain planning with significant focus on operations
- A solid understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and specifically planning and materials management
Location and Salary:
This position is currently classified as “hybrid” in accordance with Takeda’s Hybrid and Remote Work policy.
Base Salary Range: $165,200 to $236,000.00, based on candidate professional experience level. Employees may also be eligible for Short Term and Long-Term Incentive benefits as well.
