Job Duties
Position provides library services to incarcerated supervisees in support of various academic and vocational programs. Specific duties are to maintain the smooth circulation of book, video, and audio materials; determine book and supply selection; provides instruction in library and computer usage to patrons and clerical staff. Provides quality library service for supervisee, to include maintaining an organized, up-to-date Media Resource Center, teaching library skills, and selecting and organizing library materials.
Minimum Qualifications
Must possess working knowledge and experience in library services in an educational environment. Working knowledge of general library practices, acquisitions, and supervision of library staff. Experience in and knowledge of library policies and procedures. Experience managing a library in a public or educational environment. Ability to interact effectively with incarcerated individuals. Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in Library Media Pre K-12 and a Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in Library/Media Science OR Must possess or be eligible for a librarian’s license through the Library of Virginia
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree from accredited college or university in Library Science (MLS/MSLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) preferably through the Library of VA - Media Services. Possess a Librarian’s license through the Library of Virginia. Experience in implementing and managing library and its programs in correctional or other alternative setting is preferred. Teachers License from Department of Education (Media Services) is preferred. Only those Librarians who have a Teacher's license are eligible for a parity payment. Prefer experience working in a correctional or alternative school library setting.
Knowledge and ability to supervise library staff; ability to interact effectively with inmates. Working knowledge of Correctional Education and working with inmates in an educational environment is preferred.
