The Montana Historical Society (MTHS) is the guardian of Montana’s memories. We work to save the past, share our state stories, and inspire exploration, to provide meaning for today and a vision for tomorrow. MTHS is currently recruiting for a full-time Technical Services Librarian to help with our mission. This position is located within the Library & Archives program. The Library holds the nation’s largest collection of published materials related to the history of Montana. The collection includes books, maps, pamphlets, posters, periodicals, newspapers, and other resources about Montana, with supporting materials exploring the history of neighboring states and provinces. The successful candidate for this position will perform cataloging of Library materials, assist with Library acquisitions, support the digitization of Library collections, and help develop, preserve, and provide access to Library and Archives collections.

Duties

  • Produces original and copy cataloging in accordance with national library standards for submission to the MTHS online catalog and national online catalog systems.
  • Reviews and assesses donated materials to determine condition, historic value, and appropriateness for the collection according to the Collection Management policy.
  • Develops, enhances, and maintains electronic information database and patron access systems for all Library & Archives collections. Oversees the Library & Archives’ participation in the Montana Shared Catalog and ensures that our patron access system is accurate, up-to-date, and operating correctly.
  • Determines priority of Library collections for cataloging, based on knowledge of research needs, agency priorities, historical significance, and professional standards.
  • Supports the digitization of Library collections and makes digitized materials available to staff and the public, including the creation and maintenance of metadata and processes for the Library’s digital collections and projects.
  • Manages newspaper microfilming.
  • Receives and claims serial subscriptions.
  • Provides reference services by staffing the reference desk, and answering emails, letters, and phone calls.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding the cataloging and preservation of published materials and advises the public and other managers of collections on the appropriate way to catalog and preserve specific material types.
  • Provides training on cataloging standards and procedures for all Library & Archives staff.
  • Supervises volunteers.

Qualification:

  • Thorough knowledge of modern library theory, standards, and practices and their implementation.
  • Knowledge of MARC, RDA, DCRM, and Dublin Core.
  • Expertise in applying current RDA and other specialized rules, including DCRM, for special formats as required for non-book items.
  • Thorough knowledge of cataloging and content management software programs.
  • An understanding of research methods.
  • Ability to communicate simple and complex ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of Montana and western history preferred.

Education:

This position requires skills and abilities typically acquired through a Master of Library Science degree, a graduate degree in a closely related field, or equivalent experience. A minimum of two years of professional cataloging experience is ideal.

Salary: $ 25.41 - 26.91 Hourly
