The Shawnee Heights Fire District is a growing combination fire and rescue department that provides all hazard coverage to an area of approximately 144 square miles south and east of Topeka out of three stations. The district has a wide variety of terrain and occupancies from commercial and industrial to farm ground and rural residential developments. The district provides EMT-B level first responder care and is moving towards ALS first responder care. We rely heavily on our staff of part time firefighters to supplement our responses. While we currently have no residency requirement for full time firefighters, living within the district is preferred.
The position of firefighter with the Shawnee Heights Fire District encompasses entry level Firefighter through Advanced Firefighter. Firefighters are responsible for acquiring and completing progressively more advanced firefighting and emergency medical knowledge and skills, while assigned to various firefighting companies. Firefighters are responsible for performing as a team member with their assigned firefighting company, providing EMS, fire protection, rescue/extrication, and hazardous materials response.
