This is the entry level Engineering Assistant series. Under the direction of a professional engineer, assignments are designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities. Employee performs engineering calculations, reviews laboratory procedures and test results, prepares drawings and minor designs, and assists with field inspections and the preparation of engineering project documents.

Starting Pay: $27.64 - $30.20 depending on experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Use of agency specific software application programs.
  • Familiarity with the principles, theories and practices of engineering
  • Basic Knowledge of engineering design and CADD Software
  • Use of laboratory procedures and materials testing methods.
  • Able to manage significant elements in the preparation of drawings and minor designs.
  • Skilled in fundamentals of field inspection and construction documentation procedures.
  • Basic ability for plan/specifications review.
  • Capable of significant contributions in the preparation of construction drawings and designs.
  • Basic understanding of principles in basic cost estimating.

Job Duties and/or Technical Skills

  • Assists in drafting and checking drawings, reviews and prepares minor designs.
  • Utilizes computers and other equipment in engineering applications.
  • Presents reports and findings in written and oral form.
  • Performs scientific and/or technical research.
  • Assists with bidding procedure, including reviewing bid documents, meeting with various personnel and assisting with the assembling of documents.
  • Performs standard calculations and related design work.
  • May write minor technical specifications.
  • Adapts to procedural steps involved in engineering projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education and/or Experience

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or the equivalent from an accredited college or university.

Language Skills

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Possession of a valid Utah Driver’s license.

Physical Demands

  • Moderate physical activity.
  • Required to lift weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Uncomfortable working positions such as stooping, crouching and bending.

Work Environment

  • A combination of office and field work.
  • Daily interaction with the public who may or may not speak English.
  • Intermittent exposure to stress.
  • Willing to work weekends and evenings to meet job schedules and deadlines.
