Brentwood Engineering Department

Starting salary is $91k - $100k depending on experience.
Up to 5% salary increase after successful completion of six-month probationary period.

Plus: Transportation Allowance of $2000/year to be distributed equally over 26 pay periods annually.


The City of Brentwood seeks self-motivated, goal-driven, and collaborative colleague to join its team as the City Engineer – Capital Projects Specialist.

The City of Brentwood, located in scenic Williamson County, is considered one of the most desirable suburban locations in Tennessee with a population of approximately 46,000 residents.

As the City Engineer – Capital Projects Specialist, you will be responsible for managing and delivering the capital improvement program for engineering projects. Capital projects include a broad range of specialties overseeing survey, design, geotechnical reports, right-of-way acquisition, utility coordination, environmental permitting, community outreach, agency coordination, construction oversight and consultant management. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews engineering plans, geotechnical reports, drainage studies, roadway plans and other site development documentation to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Receives various project plans, documents, studies, drainage calculations, architectural drawings, permits, and test reports to review and responds as appropriate.
  • Attends and participates in public meetings pertaining to capital projects.
  • Maintains capital improvement projects budget and schedules.
  • Coordinates new development construction with existing developments; and other state governmental agencies such as TDOT and TDEC.
  • Assists Director of Engineering with other local, state, and federal planning authority priorities and attends associated meetings, grant writing and capital project initiatives.

Minimum Training and Experience Required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • At least five years of experience as a professional engineer in construction, stormwater drainage, roadway design/construction, and estimating (Prefer at least four of those years in municipal engineering).
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job may be accepted.
  • Valid Tennessee licensure as a Professional Engineer or ability to obtain it within six months is required.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines and tools which includes a computer, printer, facsimile machine, copy machine, calculator, telephone, drafting tools, surveyor's level, measuring wheel, tape measure, etc. Must be able to move or carry objects or materials and operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary work.

DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange administrative/technical information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.

LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures related to the job of City Engineer. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and a well-modulated voice.

INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand basic of complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to the job of City Engineer.

VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to supervisors and officials; to explain procedures and policies; and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.

NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; determine time and weight; and utilize statistical inference.

FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually or with office equipment.

MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated equipment.

MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
