Position Overview:

A Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) working in physician services provides essential support to healthcare professionals in a clinical setting, such as a physician's office or clinic. They perform administrative and clinical tasks to ensure efficient patient care delivery and maintain smooth operations within the practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Patient care assistance: Escort patients to exam rooms, obtain vital signs (e.g., temperature, blood pressure, pulse), record medical history, and assist with patient intake. Prepare patients for examinations or procedures and provide educational materials or instructions as directed by the healthcare provider.

  • Medical documentation: Accurately document patient information, medical histories, symptoms, and treatment plans in electronic health records (EHR) or paper charts. Ensure completeness, accuracy, and timely submission of documentation.

  • Procedure support: Assist healthcare providers during examinations, treatments, and minor surgical procedures. Prepare and maintain necessary equipment and supplies. Perform basic medical procedures, such as EKGs, venipuncture, wound care, and specimen collection.

  • Medication management: Administer medications or vaccines as authorized by the healthcare provider and according to established protocols. Document medication administration and educate patients about medications, potential side effects, and self-care instructions.

  • Patient scheduling and coordination: Schedule patient appointments, tests, and referrals, ensuring timely follow-up. Coordinate with other healthcare providers or departments to facilitate continuity of care for patients. Assist with insurance pre-authorizations and referrals as required.

  • Medical records management: Organize and maintain patient medical records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with privacy regulations. Retrieve and file records, scan documents into the EHR system, and handle medical record requests.

  • Administrative support: Perform front desk duties, including greeting patients, answering phone calls, managing patient registration, and processing insurance information. Assist with billing, coding, and insurance claims processing. Maintain inventory of medical and office supplies.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Completion of an accredited medical assistant program and certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from an accredited certifying body (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NCCT).
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and basic clinical procedures.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems and medical office software.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare professionals effectively.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize tasks, and work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Understanding of patient privacy and confidentiality regulations (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Basic knowledge of medical billing and coding processes is preferred.
  • CPR certification may be required or preferred.
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts, including evenings or weekends, depending on the operational hours of the practice.
