Job Summary and Qualifications

To ensure world class Point of Care Testing by 1) Employing state of the art equipment. 2) Setting up and maintaining the everyday operation of POCT. 3) Providing guidance for resolution of problems and issues. 4) Oversees training and competency assessment of POCT operators. 5) Develops standard operating procedures for POCT.

To ensure lab compliance with federal, state and College of American Pathologists (CAP) requirements by:

(1) performing compliance audits in the laboratory, (2) ensuring proficiency testing surveys are conducted, (3) ensuring CAP information is presented to lab team leaders, and (4) assisting in lab preparations for inspections, (5) ensures overall department quality is maintained

Complies with the Memorial Health Compliance Program, related policies and procedures and the Code of Business Practices; reports instances of perceived and actual non-compliance to Team Leader or through other reporting mechanisms.


Takes the lead in setting up and maintaining the everyday operation of all Point of Care Testing locations. Provides guidance for resolution of problems and issues that exist in any of these testing sites. Researches all aspects of Point of Care Testing on a continual basis. Oversees the training of individuals or testing personnel in all Point of Care locations. Participates in the process of designing competency assessment for all employees performing tests in POC locations. Assists in development of standard operating procedures for POCT throughout the medical center. Writes Policy and Procedures in accordance with current regulations.



Performs appropriate audits of lab testing, documentation, and billing to ensure CMS regulations are met. Reports findings to lab team leaders and hospital compliance and billing officer quarterly.



Keeps lab team leaders apprised of CAP and state standards, requirements, guidelines, and checklists. Assists in lab preparations for CAP and state inspections.



Oversees all correlation and linearity studies, QC, calibration. Evaluates and helps select POCT instrumentation. Performs cost analysis related to testing. Interfaces with POCT vendors.



Guides the purchase of proficiency testing material, performance of proficiency testing, reporting of results and corrections of errors regarding poor performance.



Insures the preparation of all sites involved in POCT for Inspections by Regulatory Agencies.



Develops and maintains viable working relationships with Nurse Managers, staff nurses, doctors and techs in order to support POCT.



Monitors and oversees that all tests are ordered and resulted in an appropriate documentation system. Reviews all Unit POCT monitoring logs on at least a monthly basis. Follows up with Nurse Managers and staff nurses on POC issues.



Maintains supplies, equipment and methods to enable employees to work efficiently and effectively.



What qualifications you will need:
  • ASCP certification or equivalent
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Medical Terminology knowledge; working knowledge of laboratory testing requirements. Comprehensive knowledge of CMS, DHR, CAP and JACHO regulations regarding Point of Care Testing. Computer skills and supervisory experience. Customer Service skills are a must.
  • 5 Years of Relevant Experience (More than 5 years as a Medical Technologist with at least a year in a supervisory or leadership role)
