Schneider Electric has an opportunity for an Automation & Controls Engineer in our Cedar Rapids, Iowa location.

The Automation & Controls Engineer will be responsible for the continuous improvement of automated assembly & fabrication equipment as well as the innovation of new machine control and data collection methods.

This is an exciting role that will offer ample opportunity to grow and learn in a highly technical field. This position will be directly responsible for Controls Engineering and advanced technical support during 1st shift. Machines and equipment include automatic conveyor systems, tablet presses, furnaces, auto-loading equipment, industrial robot arms, resistance welders, and more.


What will you do?
  • Identification & elimination of production barriers for various levels of automation including: presses, welders, conveyors, automated assembly, and robotics.
  • Update, modify, and continuously improve existing controls systems including: ladder logic programs, relay logic, electrical distribution, motor controls, operator interface, pneumatic/hydraulic distribution. Design and develop new machine controls including robotic, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic and vision systems.
  • Coordinate with production and maintenance on existing machine control modifications or installations
  • Create, maintain, and keep current all documentation: electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic schematics; panel layouts; PLC programs, operator display, operator interface, and robot programs.
  • Implement and maintain data collection systems for shop floor production equipment..
  • Cybersecurity monitoring and cyber threat hardening.
What qualifications will make you successful?
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related 4 year degree is required.
  • Hands-on industrial controls experience is required (PLCs, HMIs, I/O, industrial comm. protocols).
  • Strong PLC programming skills are required (Modicon is a plus).
  • Strong Machine vision skills are required (Cognex and Keyence is a plus).
  • Proficiency in Safety Engineering with exposure to Electrical Safety is strongly preferred.
  • Motion Control experience is strongly preferred (pneumatic and VFD control mostly).
  • AutoCAD proficiency is strongly preferred.
  • Computer networking skills are strongly preferred.
  • High proficiency with Windows is preferred (legacy Windows is a plus).
  • Robotic programming experience is preferred (Denso or Fanuc is a plus).
  • Project Management experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of CyberSecurity principles is preferred.
  • SQL programming experience is preferred.
